Study Music Project

Background: For this piece, I’m experimenting with a musical concept. I’ve deliberately mixed together two genres: hip-hop, and bossa nova. I can’t think of anyone that has done this before. And if someone has, this has definitely NOT been done frequently. However, after producing this one, I can see WHY it hasn’t been done. The greatest challenge is finding a tempo that matches both the bossa nova and the hip hop. Though both are extremely chill, by nature, their BPMs do not agree. You either speed up the bossa or you slow down the hip hop. But I seem to have found a good spot where they have agreed.

This song literally took me an entire summer to do. Partially, it is because I spent most of my summer doing clinical research at UCSF, and really had any time for music. Also, since I was in Nor Cal, I didn’t have my music equipment with me. Mixing these two genre was also a bit of an experimentation, so there was a lot of trial and error involved.

This song is titled, “Smoothie Samba.” Credit for the name goes to my friend from Med School Sunchin. It was originally titled “Hip-Nova” because this song in essence is a blend of hip hop and bossa nova. But “Smoothie Samba” captures the heart of this song way better, being a blend of different styles to create a smoothie atmostphere.

The music took a whole summer to finish, but the video and artwork took one night, not because video editting and artwork is a breeze, but because I really only have one night to do this. Today was the night after the exam, there will be 2 more in two weeks, and 1 per week on the month of September, in which the last week is just a hell week of exams. 2nd year of medical school schedule is definitely tighter than the first, but your comments on youtube really do motivate me to continue this despite the craziness. I just finished up immunology…can you guys tell from the video?
