“Left Brain Analysis”:
“Sailing into Abyss” is a music production that was heavily inspired by Nujabes. This was the first time I tried my hand at some serious sampling. In the beats by Nujabes, I found the unusual attacks and releases to be very interesting. In real-time recording, instruments will always have a unique attack, suspension, and release. However, when you sample a sound, you can really distort it however you want, and also trigger the sound at different phases of the recording to produce something that is very unique.  His relaxing yet hip sound actually got me through Life Science and Organic Chemistry, as I frequently studied for midterms and finals while listening to his tracks.

When I found out that he passed away, I was deeply saddened. In one point of my life, I listened to Nujabes tracks almost exclusively during my studies. I just thought, “man this stuff is great, I REALLY hope this guy makes more.” But now, I know that his production has been halted along with his life. And one of my first thoughts were, “Who am I going to study now?” However, I realized that after 4-5 years since O-chem, I might actually possess enough musical abilities and understanding to create tracks similar to his, which I can probably listen to and study with. There were several tracks that were fit for studying, while others weren’t, and I really started to get thinking about what made some tracks and others didn’t. And in fact, this was how the study music project was born. The study music project is a direct inspiration from the death of Nujabes. This is my way of keeping him alive, and this is my way of providing myself along with the online community with effective study music.

“Right Brain” Interpretation
I call this song “Sailing into Abyss” because as I was making this, I really wanted to create something to invoke the feeling of escaping the real world around you in a slow, blurry fade, where you can just see your worries slowly sailing away into abyss. I hope this is the feeling you guys all get.

I hope you all enjoy.
